Bridgetown Dorper stud breeder Colin Jeffrey is urging people to be clear about the differences between Dorper and Damara sheep.
In a recent E-mail to the ABC rural department Colin wrote that he objects very strongly to people clubbing Dorpers and Damaras into the same description as "exotics"
He said that there is not anywhere near the same issue for Dorper farmers as there is for Damara producers, as Damaras are only saleable on live export markets.
Colin says that 15 to 20 years ago when new sheep were introduced to Western Australia such as Dorpers, Damaras, Dohnes and Samms, they were all tagged as "exotic".
Colin explains that this has now changed and Dorpers are very well accepted on domestic markets whilst Damaras are geared to live export only.
